It is difficult to believe we are well into August, and the summer will soon come to an end. I do hope your spring and summer have allowed you to enjoy safe and happy moments with family and friends….and with your fellow IWF members! Once again, there is so much to report to you about IWF Georgia’s recent and upcoming programs: IWF Global’s recent and upcoming conferences; the work being done by your Board of Directors and their Committees; and the many, many recognitions and accomplishments of our own members. As I have said before, I am forever in awe of how accomplished and celebrated our own IWF Members are.
Programs

In the Garden
On May 24,  Mary Pat Matheson,  President and CEO of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, hosted our members for a fabulous lunch at the new Linton’s at the Garden; shared comments with us about the business of running the Garden; and provided hostesses for us to have tours of the incredible Chihuly Exhibit.  And we were so fortunate to have had spectacular weather for this special opportunity. Click here for photos from this and other recent events.

Summer Cocktail Gatherings
In past summers, we have organized one informal summer cocktail gathering.  This year, the Program Committee, chaired by Pat Upshaw-Monteith, organized three informal gatherings:  Dolce in the Shops of Buckhead on June 27;  the Mandarin Oriental on July 20; and MOCA-GA to see the fabulous Herb Creecy exhibit on August 2.   A huge thanks to Aida Flamm for organizing the Dolce and Mandarin Oriental evenings; and to Annette Cone-Skelton and Claudia Patton for the MOCA-GA evening.

We have had such a positive response to the summer cocktail gatherings that we are adding a fourth!  So mark your calendar to join us on Tuesday, August 30th at the home of Amanda Brown-Olmsted.   An invitation has been sent! 
Upcoming Programs

Dine Arounds on Sept 13 and 20
We are offering our members an option of attending the September Dine Arounds on either date, hoping that this will enable more of you to attend this very special and intimate evening in one of our member’s homes.  And we are still asking for volunteers to host a Dine Around for either date, so please let either Jennifer Langley at jenniferlangley@iwfgeorgia.org know if you are available to host. (We do all of the work for you.)   

October 11, November 9 and December 4

Please be sure you are marking your calendar for our remaining programs in 2016.   October 11 is our Annual Meeting and once again, will be hosted by Leslie Sibert at Georgia Power’s offices.   November 9 is a very exciting program with Bud Peterson, President of Georgia Tech and we will be touring the Tech Innovation Center after Bud speaks to us.   And our Holiday Party is being hosted by Carol Tome at her home on December 4.   Watch for the invites for each of these events.

IWF Global Conferences

Tel Aviv:  Seek, Solve, Soar  (May 17-19)

IWF Conferences are always magical experiences and the conference in Tel Aviv did not disappoint.   We had seven of our IWF Georgia members in attendance.   IWF Israel was simply outstanding in hosting and handling large and small details directed toward an exceptional conference experience.  From beginning to end, it was content rich and well executed.   Remarks from Shimon Peres, Ninth President of the State of Israel and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, spoke to us at the Opening Ceremony.    There were so many highlights of the program,  it is a challenge to single out any one speaker or panel, but all did love hearing from American Astronaut Cady Coleman.  And to quote our IWF Georgia and Global Board member, Marsha Sampson Johnson, “The mind and range of emotions get good workouts at IWF conferences.   Well worth the investment!”

Chicago:  Crossroads of Change  (September 28-30)

Membership Committee

A big thanks to those of you that submitted nominations for membership.   The Membership Committee, Chaired by Pat Robinson, has worked diligently to review the many nominees and will be presenting a proposed list at the September 8 Board of Directors Meeting.  You will hear shortly afterwards as to the decision on your nominee.   It was a very impressive list and I think you will be pleased when you learn about the impressive women being asked to join our IWF Forum.

Opportunities for our Members

Our member, Lisa Gordon, is the CEO of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity.  In recent years, Habitat has organized an “Atlanta Women’s Build” and given recent success, has a goal of building two homes from September 24-November 7.   And “Executive Women’s Build Day" is Wednesday, October 19.  Please contact Lisa at lisa.gordon@atlantahabitat.org if you are interested in participating or if you want to organize a group of your IWF friends!

Recognitions

There continue to be so many exciting announcements regarding our members, and it is difficult to include all of them, and I worry about the many that won’t be included here.   I do want to mention and congratulate Linda Klein, who on Monday, August 8, was named as President of the American Bar Association, the world’s largest legal organization with over 400,000 members.  Congratulations Linda!    And a mention and word of appreciation to Elisabeth Marchant, who announced the decision to close Womenetics.  Certainly every one of us have enjoyed one of her many programs, particularly the POW!Awards program where so many of our own members have been recognized.   We thank you Elisabeth for your undaunted efforts to promote and advance women leaders!   And last, not least,  on August 20th,  Kathy Bremer, our Vice President, will be honored at the CHRIStal Ball, benefitting CHRISKids.   Please contact Candy Berman at cberman@candyberman.com if you would like to attend or organize a group of IWF members at a table.

The last time I wrote to our members, summer was coming to an end, and now here we are, just days away from Autumn turning into Winter. I can assure you that it has been a very busy three months for IWF (both Global and Georgia). A brief update follows:

New IWF Georgia Members
The Membership Committee, chaired by Pat Robinson, concluded their extensive work on considering the over 30 nominations received from all of you, our members. Their work included looking at very lengthy nomination forms and bios, with strong consideration given to diversity and balance in our organization. On September 8, the Board approved the eighteen names put forth by the Committee and I am excited to tell you that seventeen (17) of the 18 accepted our invitation. Nearly all of the new members, and one of two transferring members from other IWF chapters, attended the Board of Directors’ Reception for the New (and transferring) Members in my home on November 6. Annual Membership Meeting on November 11
On November 11, Georgia Power and Leslie Sibert hosted our Forum for lunch and our Annual Meeting, at The Gathering Place. Several key announcements were shared with the attendees and include:

New By-Laws
I announced that Liz Blake, with Roxanne Douglas, has drafted a new and updated set of by-laws for our IWF Forum. This effort was done for many reasons, and involved looking at other Forums' by-laws; enhancing consistency; factoring in Georgia requirements for non-profits; and aligning our practices and requirements. Under both our old and our new proposed by-laws, our members vote on any amendments or changes. Accordingly, in the next few days, you will get a ballot with a copy of the proposed by-laws, to consider. We request your vote of approval. It is our goal to have this accomplished before yearend, allowing us to start 2017 with the new by-laws.

Membership Changes
During the year, Roxanne Douglas led a Board task force that included non-Board members to benchmark with other forums and determine best practice for membership categories and membership requirements. Roxanne presented her task force’s recommendations, and after much consideration, the Board voted on the following changes to be reflected either in the by-laws (categories of membership) or Forum Policies (requirements of membership).

The membership categories are “Active Membership”; “Approved Inactive”; “Emerita”; and “Honorary”. Each of these is defined in the proposed new by-laws.

Requirements for Active Membership, to be included in our Forum Policies, include:
—Timely payment of dues (within 90 days of invoicing)
—Participation in two formal or informal programs during the year
—Strong encouragement to periodically (once every 3 years) attend one of the two annual Global conferences

Increase in Annual Dues
For many years, IWF Georgia, along with all other forums, has paid a “per person” fee to IWF Global of $80, plus a fixed fee of $1,500. We were notified in the summer that IWF Global would be increasing the “per person” fee to $120, the first increase in over 10 years. Consequently, the Board formed a task force, chaired by Shirley Mitchell, to look at membership dues in other forums of our relative size. Our annual dues of $350, which have not been increased for a few years, were at the lower end of the range and also included more programs than other forums. In light of the IWF Global fee increase, combined with our goal of continuing to increase the quality of programming and to periodically fund a scholarship for an IWF Fellow, the Board approved a fee increase for 2017 to $450 for Active Membership. (Annual dues have also been adjusted for the new categories of Approved Inactive, to $325, and Emerita, also to $325.) Consequently, when we send the invoices out in early December for 2017 dues, you will see these increases.

Lastly, at our Annual Membership Luncheon Meeting, we were honored to hear from our most recent IWF Fellow, Danielle Donehew. Danielle dazzled us with stories of her experiences in the Fellows Program. Her presentation underscored why we want to continue to send such women of promise to this unique program.

Retreat, Retreat, Retreat!  You won’t want to miss the first IWF Georgia Retreat in years, on February 23-24 at glorious and celebrated Serenbe. Speakers will include the Hon. Shirley Franklin and Gail Evans on a rewarding lifestyle change at every age and stage; and a panel on “rebooting” with Monica Pearson, Glenda Hatchett, Ann Cramer, Becky Blalock and Beth Schapiro. The retreat kicks off on the afternoon of Feb 23 with a progressive dinner at the homes of members Dianne Harnell-Cohen and Penny McPhee and includes a tour of homes and a private performance by the Serenbe Playhouse Apprentice Cast. Details and registration coming soon.
Chicago Global Leadership Conference: Cornerstones of Change, Sept 28-30
It is hard to believe that it has been two years since we hosted the Global Conference here in Atlanta, “Human Rights, Human Responsibilities” and we still hear praises for the content, organization and quality of our conference. But the conferences just get better and better and the Chicago conference was no exception. There were over 900 attendees from over 44 countries and I am excited that we had twelve (12) members of IWF Georgia in attendance, including Elizabeth Noe who said, “It was such an inspiring room of powerful and delightful women. The topics covered by the speakers were relevant, energizing and brought our minds to places we seldom visit. We were inspired to be innovative, think about the way things can be and stretch ourselves to make the world a better place. This is my first IWF Conference, but it will not be my last!”. Jennifer McCoy commented, “I was very impressed by the substantive content focused on the Crossroads of Change (very futuristic) and learned fascinating things also relevant to my own work. But I also found it rewarding to get to know better our own Atlanta members, as well as interesting women in the individual Dine-Around experiences.”

In connection with the Chicago Conference, there was a Presidents Council meeting, which was very well organized and helpful. Edelman presented a terrific study on the IWF brand and what differentiates IWF from other women’s organizations. And the results of the first global membership survey was presented with very interesting insights into what our members like and want. Lastly, we had a chance to meet the new IWF CEO, Stephanie O’Keefe and I am convinced she will be a superstar. This is a very exciting time for our organization!

Almost every week I read about an award, a promotion or some recognition of one of our many members and it reminds me of what an accomplished and celebrated group of women our IWF Georgia members are.

February 10th Luncheon at The Carter Center, hosted by Ambassador Mary Ann Peters and Featuring President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter

We had a record attendance at this wonderful event that was in the planning for months. Working with our new member, Ambassador Mary Ann Peters and current CEO of the Carter Center since late last summer, we were able to get on the calendar of President and Mrs. Carter. President Carter joined us with some comments on his work and the focus on women and girls, and answered questions from our members. Mrs. Carter, one of our prestigious founders, joined us for the luncheon and for group photos. We had six current and Past Presidents in attendance, joining Mrs. Carter at her luncheon table. There are many wonderful photos that we can share with you and some will be on our website, or you can view & download Carter event photos by clicking here.  We want to thank both The Carter Center and Georgia Power for their generous support for the program, and of course, Mary Ann Peters for her tireless effort to help coordinate.

January 11th Luncheon: "Jerusalem: A City Divided" - hosted by Gail Evans

When IWF Global announced the 2016 Cornerstone Conference was to be held in Tel Aviv, Gail Evans immediately went to work to organize, host and sponsor a very informative program to help us understand and demystify the city of Jerusalem. The program had over 60 members attending and was a very exciting way to start our 2016 program year.

March 8 An Evening at The Opera

Months ago, we started meeting with Tomer Zvulen, the General Manager and Artistic Director for the Atlanta Opera. Tomer brings world class talent to our local opera company and is quickly bringing national and global accolades to the programming. We wanted to create an event that would allow our members a chance to get “up close and personal” with Tomer and with the Opera operations, by organizing a private dinner, backstage tour and best-in-class seats at the performance of Pirates of Penzance. Dine Arounds
In every Forum conference and in every Forum chapter, the overwhelming feedback from members is that Dine Arounds are the favorite event. These intimate dinners, hosted by members in their homes for six-ten members, provide a unique and bonding experience among our members. Liz Blake, retired senior vice president of Habitat for Humanity International, has been appointed chair of the Carter Center's Board of Councilors for 2016. The board comprises 239 members, who serve as a leadership advisory group that promotes understanding among opinion leaders and the broader community of The Carter Center and its activities. ​Shan Cooper
MARIETTA — Shan Cooper stunned many in the community this week when it was announced she was stepping down as Lockheed Martin’s vice president and general manager of the company’s Marietta facility, but Cooper said her decision was motivated by a desire to stay in Cobb County.

“From a personal perspective, I really wanted to be in a position where I was going to be here locally. I love Cobb County, I love the Atlanta area,” Cooper said in an interview with the MDJ on Friday.

As the general manager of the Marietta facility, which has shared a runway with Dobbins Air Reserve Base for more than 60 years, a promotion within Lockheed would have likely required her to move elsewhere, Cooper said.

“There would have been a strong possibility,” she said. “This role is the most senior role here, so if I was going to grow to the next level, it probably would have required a relocation. We just decided as a family — this was a joint decision with my husband, my daughter, my family and my parents and his parents and everybody had a vote — that we really love this area and I love this community and we really wanted to stay here.”

She’s also going to become a grandmother in May when her daughter, Chantel Williams, has her first child, making it even more important for Cooper to stay in Cobb.

Well, what an experience. Friday was filled with ceremony, emotional moments, love and family. I've attached photos of GT's Commencement and Hooding Ceremonies for PhDs. To my surprise, my one-in-a-million husband posted the most moving statement (along with the photos) on Facebook (can't believe he made this public!):

"Today has been a great day. I’m proud to announce that my wife, Diane Alleva Cáceres, officially received her PhD in International Affairs, Science, and Technology from Georgia Tech. In doing so she became the first woman to receive this degree from Georgia Tech. Today’s ceremony represents the culmination of seven years of study, research, travel, and (much) writing in addition to running her consulting firm in international business and raising our wonderful daughter.

It’s hard to express how wonderful it is to see someone you love achieve one of their lifelong dreams. Here at home, we all feel like we’re on cloud nine as we share Diane’s joy. Diane has been a true inspiration to me, our daughter, as well as our extended family and our friends. I couldn’t be prouder. Congratulations, Diane!"
